"The Flying Brick" One of about 500 imported into the US and a total production run of about 6,000 the K1 came as a surprise to both BMW enthusiasts and motorcyclists generally. Coming from a company known for building very conservative looking bikes and with a similarly conservative customer base what were they thinking! Introduced in 1988, it was flamboyant, it had more than two cylinders, and it certainly wasn't a BMW as everyone knew them. With it's four cylinder DOHC fuel injected engine, single sided swing arm, ABS brakes, and "Wild" color scheme it apparently wasn't received well. All this is a great shame because these bikes are fast, smooth, comfortable and a blast to ride, the one drawback to owning one is the amount of time you spend telling people that it is not a new model on test and is in fact nearly eighteen years old! Enthusiasts in Europe eventually came to appreciate the "Flying Brick" as an exciting, reliable sports tourer. With it's mildly dropped handlebar position high mileages can be covered in a day without undue fatigue, and at the same time it is eminently "flickable" on the twisty stuff, indeed they were used for One Class racing in Germany, not bad for a touring bike. The bike has 21,900 miles on it, and as mentioned above is smooth, quiet and fast, everything works as it should and it comes with the original tool kit, tubeless tire repair kit and even a BMW flashlight! Also included is The BMW tank-top bag system shown in the photos. There is a dent in the extreme rear of the muffler cover, which would knock out, and a repair to the right side K1 graphic, at some time one rear storage cover was scratched/lost and while the paint is a good color match the finish leaves something to be desired, again an easy fix. This is an opportunity to own a rare but usable classic, if it ends up in a living room the new owner will be hunted down and shot! Thanks for looking and good luck in bidding. |
